How to add alt text in bulk in WordPress

· Lidor Asulin

Opening attachments one by one is fine for a new upload. It is a bad plan for a library that already has hundreds or thousands of gaps. Bulk generation exists so that backlog can move in the background.

Start with a count, not a button mash

EzAlt’s screen under Media shows how many images are missing alt text. That number is the size of the job. Images that already have alt text are not part of it.

Run bulk generation when you are ready. The work is queued with WordPress cron, so a large library does not depend on a single request staying open in the browser.

New uploads are a separate switch

Automatic generation on upload is optional and off by default for new installs. Turn it on if you want new files described as they arrive. It uses the same credits as a bulk run: one successful image, one credit.

You can also generate alt text on a single attachment from the Media Library, when you only need one.
